Abstract

Purpose: : To evaluate the best corrected visual acuity and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity in pseudophakic patients implanted either with the aspheric intraocular lens (Acrysof IQ) designed to correct for corneal spherical aberration or with conventional IOL(Acrysof NATURAL)

Methods: : Two IOLs were tested. Acrysof IQ with aspherical profile on the posterior surface of the optic and Acrysof Natural with shperical profile. One hundred eyes of fifty patients were included. Twenty five patients have been implanted bilaterally with each type of IOL. One month and three months after surgery, best spectacle corrected distance visual acuity was mesaured. Contrast sensitivity was mesaured by OPTEC 6500 for distance at photopic and mesopic luminance level with optical correction in place. Tested spatial frequences were 3,6,12,18 cycles per degree.

Results: : The best corrected visual acuity was similar between the 2 IOL groups. The Acrysof IQ group had significantly higher contrast sensitivity during all spatial frequencies during mesopic testing without glare and with glare; and under photopic conditions at 3,6 ,12.

Conclusions: : The Acrysof IQ had significantly higher contrast sensitivity than eyes with Acrysof Natural
