Abstract

Purpose: : To quantify the role of posterior zonular tension during simulation of accommodation in a lens stretcher.

Methods: : Five post-mortem (11±12 hours) eyes from five Hamadryas Baboons (6.9±2.2 years old) were dissected leaving intact the lens, zonules, ciliary body, hyaloid membrane, anterior vitreous and a segmented scleral rim. The lens preparation was mounted in an optomechanical lens stretching system and the sclera was stretched 2mm radially in a step-wise fashion. The load, lens diameter, ciliary body diameter, lens power, lens thickness, and the anterior and posterior radius of curvature were measured during stretching. The zonular fibers attached to the posterior lens surface were then carefully transected using a diamond blade and the experiment was repeated. The changes in the lens and ciliary body diameter and the lens power, thickness and anterior and posterior radius of curvature before and after transection of the zonules were compared.

Results: : The change in lens thickness, power, and anterior and posterior radius was reduced in all eyes after posterior zonular transection. The change in lens thickness, power, and anterior and posterior radius (before/after transection) was 0.67±0.41mm/0.47±0.31mm (p=0.036), 11.6±3.4D/7.3±3.8D (p=0.007), 3.13±1.25mm/1.97±0.59mm (p=0.079), 1.03±0.43mm/0.50±0.23mm (p=0.049).

Conclusions: : During accommodation in a lens stretcher, the posterior zonules contribute significantly to change the shape of both surfaces of the Baboon lens.
