Abstract

Purpose:

To determine plasma citrate levels in glaucoma patients.

Methods:

Plasma and urine citrate and creatinine levels were determined in 6 glaucoma patients and 6 matched controls by ion chromatography and the citrate fractional excretion calculated.

Results:

The mean citrate and creatinine concentrations (µmol/L) were (table). Significant lower plasma citrate concentrations were found in glaucoma patients whereas the citrate fractional excretion was not different.

Conclusions:

Glaucoma might be a mitochondria associated disease. Since citrate is a major component in mitochondrial metabolism its determination in plasma might serve as a biomarker.
