Abstract
Purpose: :
To study the influence of diathermo-coagulation on the character of the inflammatory-reparative reaction of sclera in experiment in vivo.
Methods: :
A series of experiments was carried out with 50 Wistar mature rats. Animals of the 1st group received conjunctivectomy and diathermo-coagulation of sclera, while animals of the 2nd group received only conjunctivectomy. In the experiment, we conducted biomicroscopy and photographic recording of the anterior segment of an eye at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 14th, and 21th day with the following histological investigation.
Results: :
At the 21st day, the conjunctival epithelium in animals of the 1st group had the normal structure. The sclera was thickened. A heterogeneous edema of the ground substance was still observed. Fibroblasts predominated among cells. In animals of the 2nd group, the conjunctival epithelium had the normal structure. The sclera was represented by a dense connective tissue.
Conclusions: :
Diathermo-coagulation of sclera favors the development and maintenance of the inflammatory reaction, thus giving rise to prerequisites for excessive scarring.
