Abstract

Purpose: : To report the features and changes of cytokine especially of vascular endothelial growth factor and defensin in diabetes compared with control group

Methods: : To report the features and changes of cytokine especially of vascular endothelial growth factor and defensin in diabetes compared with control group.

Results: : The mean vitreous level of defensin was 362±0.46 ng/ml in diabete patients and 138±95 ng/ml in normal group. Mean VEGF level of diabete patients was 158±25 ng/ml and 46±27 ng/ml in control group. There was significantly elevated defensin β-2 in diabetes, but the difference of others (defensin β-1, defensin β-3) were not statistically significant.

Conclusions: : Vascular endothelial growth factor and defensin are significantly elevated in vitreous humor in eyes of patients with diabetic retinopathy when compared to control eyes of patients without diabetes. This study will be the basis data that is helpful to find out characteristics of other cytokines.
