Abstract

Purpose: : To compare the antimicrobial activity of Alcon Acrysof SN 60, AMO Z9000, Staar Afinity CQ2015 Collamer intraocular lens (IOL) soaked in Moxifloxacin 0.5% for one minute

Methods: : Twenty (20) Alcon SN 60 acrylic, Twenty (20) AMO Z9000 silicone ,and Twenty (20) Staar Afinity CQ2015 Collamer IOLs were soaked in Moxifloxacin 0.5% for one minute. All IOLs were dried on each side for one minute then plated on Mueller Hinton agar with quality controlled ATCC 25923 Staphylococcus aureus overlay. One of each IOL was soaked in normal saline as a control.

Results: : All antibiotic soaked IOLs had kill zones as compared to no kill zones for the normal saline soaked lenses. A comparison of condition means was performed using repeated measure ANOVA which was found to be highly significant (P<0.001). Average kill zones for moxifloxacin soaked Z9000, Collamer IOL and SN60 was 28.15mm, 34.75mm, and 37.3mm respectively.
