To evaluate the association between retinopathy and HLA Class II alleles in T2D.
We designed a case-control study in which 124 mestizo Mexican patients with an at least 10 years of T2D and diabetic retinopathy. DNA was extracted and HLA-DR regions were amplified using PCR. Alleles were determined by DNA hybridization. Diagnosis was assessed clinically. Incidence of HLA-DR alleles in patients was compared with ethnically matched control group of healthy subject (n=238) and patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)(n=65). Statistical significance was established with non-parametric test
Patients with PDR showed an association the alleles of DRB1*1406 when compared to the controls (p=0.03, OR=2.2). No differences was found when DRB1 and DQB1 were compared between the groups
We suggest that the allele of Amerindian ancestry (DRB1*1406) with additive minor effects, contribute to the expression of PDR in Mexican patients with T2D
