Abstract

Purpose: : To study the incidence of ocular complications associated with intravitreal injections in a community-based setting over a five-year period.

Methods: : A retrospective case review of 3,033 intravitreal injections performed for a variety of diagnoses including diabetic retinopathy and wet macular degeneration was performed to determine the incidence of ocular complications.

Results: : Complications included 1 retinal break, 3 retinal detachments, 4 vitreous hemorrhages, and no cases of endophthalmitis.

Conclusions: : The incidence of ocular complications secondary to intravitreal injections in this community-based setting was lower than expected from trial data.

Keywords: vitreoretinal surgery • endophthalmitis • drug toxicity/drug effects
