Abstract

Purpose:

To compare positivity of dry swab transported in Stuart mediaand humid swab transported in the assay tube for conjunctivalmicrobiota sample collection of normal healthy individuals

Methods:

80 normal eyes of 40 healthy individuals had been studied. Inthe right eye, the conjunctival sample collection was performedwith dry swab and transported to the microbiology lab with Stuarttransportation media. In the left eye, the conjuntival samplecollection was performed using swab with cotton humidified insaline solution 0.9% and transported in a dry and sterile assaytube. The samples had been analyzed in the maximum period of2 hours after the sample collection. All samples were culturedin blood agar, Sabouraud agar and chocolate agar and analyzedafter 24 hours. Muller-Hinton media were used to confirm themicroorganism and analyze its microbiological profile.

Results:

We observed positivity in 10 (25%) samples for the humid swabtransported in dry tube and 12 (30%) samples for the dry swabtransported in Stuart media. The microbiological profile didnot show a regular pattern.

Conclusions:

The positivity and the microbiological profile of normal conjuntivalmicrobiota using the dry tube were similar to the samples transportedin Stuart media
