Abstract

Purpose:: To investigate the effects of mitomycin C (MMC) on ciliary body and intraocular pressure (IOP) when used after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in an experimental model.

Methods:: Forty eyes of 20 rabbits underwent PRK to correct -8 diopters (D) in a 5 mm optical zone. Sterile surgical sponges (5mm) soaked with 0.02% MMC were applied over the corneas exposed stroma randomly on one eye for two minutes (study group), while on the fellow eye (control group), sponges soaked with balanced salt solution (BSS) were applied for the same time. Ciliary bodies were evaluated histologically, in a masked fashion, by light and transmission electron microscopy.

Results:: Histological examination of the morphology of ciliary body structures did not reveal any difference between the examined groups. Furthermore, tonometric measurements of the IOP remained stable during the follow-up period with no significant changes between the interval meantime (p=0.75).

Conclusions:: Adjuvant application of MMC after PRK does not seem to induce alterations on the ciliary body or to changes in IOP measurements.
