Abstract

Purpose: : Measure the effect of cutting a mechanical keratome flap and inserting an intracorneal inlay on Intraocular Pressure (IOP) measurement using human donor eyes.

Methods: : Two human donor eyes were inflated to different pressures: 10, 15, 22 and 29 mm Hg using a constant pressure system with a pressure gauge. A needle was inserted into the posterior chamber of the donor eye to inflate the globe to the desired pressure. A modified Goldman applanation tonometer (GAT) used to validate the constant pressure system. A Tonopen tonometer was used to measure the IOP of the human donor eyes at each inflation pressure. A mechanical keratome was used to cut a flap on each donor eye. The flap thickness of one eye was 120 µm and the other eye was 200 µm. The post keratome IOP was remeasured at each inflation pressure. A +1.00 D and +6.00 D ReVision Optics intracorneal inlays were inserted underneath the keratome flap and post implant IOP measurements were repeated at each inflation pressure.

Results: : The system pressure (inflation pressure) was 10, 15, 22 and 29 mm Hg and the Tonopen IOP measurements were 6.6±1.2, 13.4±2.8, 21.9±1.2, and 30.8±3.3 mm Hg. FIRST EYE: After cutting a 120 µm flap in one eye the Tonopen IOP measurements were 10.6±2.5, 13.4±1.1, 18.8±2.4, and 30.4±1.5 mm Hg respectively. After insertion of +1.00 ReVison Optic intracorneal inlay the Tonopen IOP measurements were 7.2±1.1, 14.2±2.6, 23.3±3.4, and 33.0±3.7 mm Hg. After insertion of +6.00 ReVison Optic intracorneal inlay the IOP was 10.0±1.0, 13.4±0.9, 20.4±1.3, and 28.0±1.6 mm Hg. SECOND EYE: After cutting a 200 µm flap the Tonopen IOP measurements were 11.2±2.5, 7.8±0.4, 13.2±1.3, and 20.2±5.4 mm Hg. After insertion of +1.00 ReVison Optic intracorneal inlay the Tonopen IOP measurements were 14.2±2.2, 11.4±3.9, 9.4±1.1, and 13.0±2.5 mm Hg. After insertion of +6.00 ReVison Optic intracorneal inlay the Tonopen IOP measurements were 7.0±2.0, 7.3±1.5, 8.2±2.2, and 16.3±2.0 mm Hg.
