Abstract

Purpose: : To evaluate the long–term repeatability of colour vision testing in normal eyes.

Methods: : 13 normal eyes of 13 subjects were evaluated. Cambridge Colour Contrast Trivector (CCCT) thresholds, Ishihara Pseudoisochromatic Plate (IPP) error score and Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue (FM) error score were assessed at 2 timepoints for each subject.

Results: : The mean subject age was 66.0 years (range 58 – 77 years). 61.5% (n=8) of subjects were female and 38.5% (n=5) male. 53.8% (n=7) of eyes were left and 46.2% (n=6) right. Mean FM error score at baseline was 121.5 (SD 69.2) and at last follow up was 99.7 (SD 46.8). Mean baseline CCCT protan threshold was 116.5 (SD 72.84) and 87.46 (SD 25.2) at last follow–up. Mean deutan threshold at baseline was 140.9 (SD 87.0) and 93.9 (SD 47.0) at last follow–up. Mean tritan threshold at baseline was 235.3 (SD 116.1) and 201.0 (SD 111.61) at last follow–up. Mean IPP error score at baseline was 1.1 (SD 1.3) and 1.0 (SD 0.96) at last follow–up. The mean last follow–up was 6.38 months (SD 2.92). Baseline and last follow–up scores were compared; the mean change in FM error score was 21.8 (SD = 51.2), the mean change in protan threshold was 29.1 (SD = 74.2), the mean change in deutan threshold was 47.0 (SD = 73.4), the mean change in tritan threshold was 33.8 (SD = 96.4) and the mean change in Ishihara errors was –0.08 (SD = 0.76)

Conclusions: : These data provide an estimate of long term change in normal subjects for these three tests of colour vision. This data is important in distinguishing change that may be due to disease progression from that due to the normal variability inherent in psychophysical tests.
