Abstract
Purpose: :
Patients enrolled in this prospective, interventional study signed written, informed consent. Standardized patient questionnaires and standardized physician examination forms were completed pre– and post–operatively to quantitate eyelid function and appearance.
Methods: :
Patients enrolled in this prospective, interventional study signed written, informed consent. Standardized patient questionnaires and standardized physician examination forms were completed pre– and post–operatively to quantitate eyelid function and appearance.
Results: :
Between January, 1996 and June, 1999, 170 patients were included in this study. Patients (percentages) underwent the following procedures: ptosis repair (61%), ectropion repair (15%), entropion repair (12%), lid retraction repair (10%), and orbit procedure including enucleation (2%). Pre–operative questionnaires were completed by 100% (170/170) of patients; post–operative questionnaires were completed by 52% (88/170) of patients. All standardized physician evaluation forms were completed. By ANOVA, factors which predicted multiple operations were thyroid disease (p=0.0007) and enucleation (p=0.004). Factors which significantly improved after surgery by both patient and physician report were appearance (p=0.00001), eyelid position (p=0.002), and dry eye symptoms (p=0.004).
Conclusions: :
Thyroid disease and enucleation statistically predicted requiring multiple oculoplastic procedures in this prospective, interventional study.
