Abstract

Purpose: : Macular role size has been shown to play a role in surgical success rates. The aim of our study was to assess the usefulness of digital photography and the Visupac software in assessing the various parameters of a full thickness macular hole.

Methods: : Retrospective study of digital photographs of 15 cases of full thickness macular hole, which had been confirmed by optical coherence tomography(OCT). The VISUPAC software was used to calculate the maximum linear diameter and surface area of the macular hole.

Results: : There were 5 male and 10 female patients. Their mean age was 67 years. The maximum linear diameter ranged from 450 – 1030µ with a mean of 715µ . The mean diameter of the inner rim was 400µ (Range 220 – 680µ). The mean surface area was 0.182 mm² (Range 0.11 – 0.44 mm²). This correlated well with clinical and OCT findings.

Conclusions: : This method of software based digital photography seems to be an useful and relatively less expensive way of accurately documenting full thickness macular hole size. While this does not replace OCT in diagnosing macular holes, it might help in predicting the surgical outcome.
