Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To prospectively measure the scotopic pupil diameter in a normal population in young Chinese subjects Methods: 186 eyes of 93 normal subjects (mean age 31years±7.9 [SD]) were evaluated for pupil sizes under scotopic condition (0.02Luxes) using computerized infrared pupilometer (Made by Beijing And–sight Corporation). All subjects were examined by the same researcher following the dark adaptation of two minutes, and 40 examinees were examined again after one week by the same researcher. Results: Under scotopic condition, the mean pupil diameter of the right eyes was 7.04±0.93mm(range: 4.85–8.89mm)while that of the left eyes was 7.11±0.86mm(range: 4.99–9.13mm), which showed statistical difference between bilateral pupils. Our data revealed no significant sex difference of size of pupil. For 40 subjects undergoing repeated examinations, the average pupil sizes of the right and left eyes were 6.93±1.05mm(range:4.85–8.81mm) and 7.02±0.99mm(range:4.87–9.05mm) respectively upon the first examination; upon the second examination, the average pupil diameters of the right and left eyes were 6.93±0.93mm(4.87–8.89mm)and 7.05±0.94mm(4.99–9.13mm) respectively. There was not any significant difference between the results of the two separate examinations for either eye. Conclusions: A precise measurement of scotopic pupil size is necessary before refractive corneal and refractive lens surgery. Infrared pupilometer provides us with quantitative information of pupil under scotopic condition.
