Abstract

Abstract:

To establish the fluorquinolones MIC 90 values for ocular Gram negative bacilli and Gram positive cocci in São Paulo – Brazil.

We carried out in vitro antibiotic susceptibility test (E–test) and determined the MIC 90 values for gatifloxacin (GAT), moxifloxacin (MOX), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ofloxacin (OFLOX) for ocular Gram negative bacilli and Gram positive cocci strains. Selected isolated pathogens from keratitis, conjunctivitis and endophthalmitis were tested.

Ciprofloxacin MIC 90 is lower for some Gram negative bacilli, while Moxifloxacin and Gatifloxacin MIC 90 values was lower for all Gram positive cocci. Based on MIC values results, the fourth generation fluorquinolones may offer some advantages over the second generation. Our results in a specific geographical area are comparable with the latest published data.
