Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To describe a novel method of improved internal limiting membrane (ILM) staining using trypan blue and PCPV. Methods: This is an interventional case series study. Patients with idiopathic macular holes stages 2, 3 and 4 underwent three port pars plana vitrectomy with continuous infusion of perfluorocarbon (PCPV). Before line infusion opening, a mixture of equal volumes of trypan blue and dextrose 50% was injected. Vitrectomy and posterior vitreous detachment were then performed and perfluorocarbon liquid was left over the posterior pole for 3 minutes. Finally ILM was peeled, fluid/air exchange performed and SF6 used as a tamponade. Results: Ten patients were included in this study. ILM was easily visible and completely removed in all cases. No difficulties were encountered during any of the procedures. At three months follow–up visits no complications were recorded with 90% of anatomical success and visual acuity improvement in 80 % of patients. Conclusions: The use of trypan blue mixed with equal volumes of 50% dextrose during PCPV appeared to be a safe and effective method in enhancing trypan blue staining of the ILM.
