Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of high–density silicone oil for complicated and inferior retinal detachment. Methods:Eyes presenting retinal detachment requiring internal tamponade with high–density silicone oil from May 2003 to September 2004 (n=119) were retrospectively analysed. The 50 patients presenting a good follow–up (mean 7.3 months) were studied. Mean age was 58 years (5–83). Results were compared with a group of eyes treated by standard silicone. Results:Indications of high–density silicone were PVR (44%), inferior and posterior break (30%), inferior retinotomy (26%). Silicone exchange was performed with perfluorocarbon liquid (78%), BSS (18%) or air (4%). Postoperative inflammation was moderated during the first month, negative to the final follow–up. Intraocular pressure was not statistically different with the group of light–silicone. Silicone removal was performed in 70% after 3.7 + 2 months, by an automatic device. Ocular adherence was present in 3 cases (8.5%). Emulsion was present in 5 cases. After 6 months follow–up, 71% retina were reapplicated, 7% macula were detached, 22% presented peripheral detachment. Conclusions:This study confirms the good tolerance and efficacy of high–density silicone–oil. Ablation is easy, adherence and emulsion are rare and seem independant of exchange types.
