Abstract: :
Purpose: to evaluate, in patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the YAG capsulotomy rates in according to the type of IOL implanted. Methods:150 eyes of 85 patients with RP were submitted to cataract extraction (classic extracapsular and phacoemulsification) with posterior chamber IOL implantation. IOL’s type implanted was randomised. The eyes were divided in four groups: group 1 (58 eyes) with Hydrophobic acrylate IOLs, group 2 (10 eyes) with Hydrophilic acrylate IOLs, group 3 (22 eyes) with Silicone IOLs, and group 4 (eyes 60) PMMA IOLs. The patients, after the cataract surgery, were observed to 3, 6 and 12 months, to evaluate the presence of the PCO requiring YAG laser capsulotomy. Results: After one year, 55% with AcrySof Hydrophobic acrylate IOLs , 28.6% of eyes with Pharmacia HSM, 12.5% Soleko PMMA IOLs and 10% with IOLs AMO Phacoflex SI–40NB Allergan silicone there were not PCO requiring YAG laser capsulotomy. P values less than 0.5 were considered statistically significant. Conclusions: Development of a PCO causes a worsening of visual acuity in patients with RP. The IOL materials can have effect on PCO, with a significant reduction the YAG laser caspulotomy seen with AcrySof hydrophobic acrylate IOLs in comparison to the PMMA, Corneal Morcher hydrophilic acrylate and silicone IOLs used.
