Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To determine the feasibility of using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy in a large study designed to investigate the optic disc parameters as a function of age and race. Methods: Subjects with no ophthalmic disorders other than strabismus or amblyopia were prospectively identified. The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II (HRT II) was used to perform morphometric analysis of the optic disc of one randomly selected eye of each subject. In subjects with amblyopia, the non–amblyopic eye was selected. All images were analyzed by two glaucoma specialists by consensus, masked to the subjects’ age and race. Results: 44 subjects, 5 through 15 years old, were successfully scanned with HRT II. Of the resultant scans, 35 (80%) were judged to be of sufficient quality to be analyzed. The mean optic disc parameters for children of all ages and races were: Disc Area: 2.05 mm2 (SD 0.62), Cup Volume: 0.103 mm3 (SD 0.113), Linear Cup–to–Disc Ratio: 0.397 (SD 0.177). Conclusions: Assessment of optic disc morphology in children can be effectively performed with HRT II scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. The determination of these parameters in the context of a population–based survey of normal children will provide a useful standard database that characterizes the pediatric optic nerve as a function of race and age.
