Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To examine whether triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injection under Tenon capsule at surgery can prevent posterior synechia after vitrectomy with gas tamponade and lens surgery. Methods: Two hundred seventy–one eyes with idiopathic macular hole, which underwent vitrectomy with 12% C3F8 gas tamponade, phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implatation, were enrolled in this study. In 80 eyes of Group A, TA (20mg) was injected under Tenon cupsule at the surgery. One hundred ninety–one eyes in Group B had no TA injection. Synechiotomy was performed in all eyes with posterior synechia between iris and anterior lens capsule. Results: In Group A, no eyes had synechilotomy, and 9 eyes had synechilotomy in Group B. The possibility of posterior synechia in Group A was lower than that in Group B. Conclusions: The incidence of posterior synechia after combined procedure of vitrectomy with gas tamponade and lens surgery is higher than that after vitrectomy or lens surgery. Our results indicated TA injection under Tenon capsule at the surgery may be useful to prevent posterior synechia. This technique may decrease the anterior chamber inflammation after surgery.
