Abstract
Abstract: :
Purpose: To assess morphological characteristics of the posterior pole of the retina by optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the affacted and fellow eyes in patients suffering from central serous chorioretinopathy (CRCS). Patients and methods: In a prospective consecutive serie of 46 patients (age 27–54 yrs) presenting CSCR, a complete clinical ophthalmologic examination (including visual acuity, retinal biomicroscopy, fluorescence angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography) of both eyes was performed. Size of the affected area, macular volume (MV) and foveolar thickness (FT) were measured by OCT in both eyes and compared with pathologic changes seen by FA. Results: All affected eyes had serous macular detachment and pathologic changes in MV and FT demonstrated by OCT. In 17 of the fellow eyes macular edema and pigment epithelial detachment were observed while 29 proved to be normal. Conclusion: OCT characteristics (MV and FT) showed abnormalities of retinal morphology in all affected eyes and 36,7 % of the fellow eyes of the patients. The size of the detached areas measured by OCT and FA correlated in the affected eyes. Pathological changes in the 17 fellow eyes were more characteristic by OCT than in FA. OCT seemes to be a sensitive diagnostic method to assess retinal abnormalities in CRCS even in the fellow eyes.
