Abstract
Abstract: :
Purpose: To document clinical profile of patients presenting with intermediate uveitis and natural course of the disease in Asian population. Methods:The study design is a descriptive retrospective case series from uveitis database of 626 patients. Out of 49 patients of intermediate uveitis, forty–five patients (77 eyes) with a minimum 6 month follow up were identified. Data on demography, patterns of clinical presentation, systemic association, complications, treatment modalities, visual outcome and natural course of the disease was analyzed. Results:The incidence of intermediate uveitis (IU) in our series is 12.7%. Demographic data from these patients revealed an age range of 9 to 64 years with mean age at the presentation being 32 years. In our series, there was seldom any systemic association.Vitritis and papillitis were the commonest presenting signs followed by vitreous clumps. Snowbank was uncommon clinical feature in our series. Vitreous hemorrhage resulted from acute posterior vitreous detachment with spontaneous resolution of hemorhage. Seventy percent of the patients had a final visual acuity of 6/12 or better and the commonest cause for poor vision was cataract. Conclusions:Overall favourable outcome of patients with pars planitis has been documented in past. In our opinion, aggressive treatment of inflammation aids in better final visual outcome. Also, clinical spectrum of Intermediate Uveitis in our Asian patient differs from previously published data where snowbanking is a feature seen often.
