Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To compare the higher order aberration (HOA) capture of the VISX WaveScan and LADARWave aberrometers at nominal capture zones, as well as at same–size actual capture zones. Methods: Wavefront capture was performed on 27 eyes of 14 pre–custom LASIK candidates using the VISX WaveScan and LADARWave aberrometers at physiologic pupillary diameters of 6.5 and 6.0 mm. Results: Stated in root mean square (RMS)

OZ= Optical Zone. CD=Capture Diameter. PD= Pupillary Diameter. SA= Spherical Aberration. TF=Trefoil. LADAR with OZ, CZ, and PD of 6.0/6.5/6.5 captured more HOAs than LADAR (5.5/6.0/6.0), (p<0.05) and VISX (6.0/6.0/6.5), (p<0.05). VISX (6.0/6.0/6.0) capture was comparable to a (5.5/6.0/6.0) LADAR for total HOAs and Coma, and had a blend formula that resulted in SA capture comparable to LADAR (6.0/6.5/6.5). VISX capture with 6.0/6.0/6.5 was similar to 6.0/6.0/6.0 except for an unexpected decrease in SA and TF capture (p<0.05), the reasons for which are not clear. Conclusions:VISX 6.0 mm OZ capture is comparable to LADAR 5.5 mm OZ capture for total HOAs, Coma, and Trefoil. LADARWave with a 6.5 mm pupil and capture diameter yields more HOAs for a 6.0 mm OZ than LADAR with a smaller pupil or VISX with a 6.0 mm OZ.
