Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To evaluate postoperative high–order aberrations caused by the shape–modification of the eye ball by scleral buckling surgery to repair retinal detachment. Methods: We evaluated postoperative high–order aberrations of five patients who had received scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment using the wave front analyzer KR–9000PW TM (TOPCON, Japan). Results: All of the patients received a local circumferential buckle (not encircling) for their retinal detachments. Four of five eyes did not have any postoperative high–order aberration (mean RMS value=0.135) and the remaining eye showed a strong–high order aberration (RMS value=0.416), which was mainly due to the resultant corneal distortion, however the aberration was resolved after two months postoperatively. Conclusions: Scleral buckling surgery for repairing retinal detachment causes less high–order aberration in the cornea than previously thought, though there remains a possibility that the machine cannot measure high–order aberrations due to posterior scleral deformity from scleral buckling surgeries.
