Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose:To report the optical coherence tomographic (OCT) findings in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) detachments. Methods:24 eyes were analyzed by OCT and by fluorescein (FA) and/or indocyanine green (IA) angiography. Results: RPE detachments were classified by the OCT images into those with a partial or total highly reflective line in the area of the detachment (9 eyes / Type 1), and those that showed the same reflex in the detached area as in other parts (15 eyes / Type 2). Type 1 eyes had irregular hyperfluorescence by FA, significantly larger detachments, and lower visual acuity than the Type 2 eyes. Two types showed the lapse, which differs respectively. As for feature of Type 1,age was young, showed the lapse of vision satisfactory. But, as for Type 2, at advanced age, as for vision convalescence it was defective. Conclusion: The OCT showed that two types of RPE detachments are associated with eyes with different characteristics. The highly reflected line of OCT, which is recognized in Type 2, is a possibility of catching the Bruch’s membrane whose normal compared to structure is heterogeneous.
