Purpose:To compare the validity of optical coherence tomography (OCT) versus Heidelberg retina tomography (HRT II) in the evaluation of retinal thickness following photodynamic therapy (PDT). Methods:Forty patients with predominantly classic choroidal neovascularization (CNV) due to age–related macular degeneration (AMD) were tested for visual acuity and examined by OCT, HRT II macular module and fluorescein angiography (FLA) before as well as 6 and 12 weeks after PDT. Foveal thickness measured by OCT in 9 fields was compared to the edema index obtained by HRT II in 9 fields and the presence of leakage as determined by FLA. Results: Foveal thickness measured by OCT did not correlate with the edema index given by HRT II before or after treatment. Moreover, the presence of leakage in FLA was independent of both foveal thickness and edema index at all visits. Conclusions:At this time, 9–field edema map by HRT II and 9–field retinal map by OCT cannot replace evaluation of CNV by fluorescein angiography.
