Purpose:Previous studies of Laser Trabeculoplasty (LTP) in pseudophakic patients have had no control groups for comparison. This study compared the efficacy of LTP in pseudophakic and phakic patients with primary open–angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods:This was a retrospective comparative case–control series of 22 pseudophakic eyes and 18 phakic eyes of age– and gender–matched patients, who had open–angle glaucoma not controlled with medical therapy and were treated with LTP. Success was defined as reduction of IOP of at least 3 mm Hg. Results:The mean + SD intraocular pressure (IOP) before LTP was 23.0 + 7.4 mm Hg in pseudophakic and 20.8 + 4.1 mm Hg in phakic eyes. At one year after LTP, the change from baseline IOP was not significantly different in pseudophakic (–6.3 + 8.0 mm Hg) and phakic eyes (–5.0 + 3.1 mm Hg) (p =0.6 ). Success at 12 months was 85 % for pseudophakic and 69 % for phakic eyes, which was not significantly different (p =0.8 ). Two years after LTP, in successfully treated eyes, the mean IOP was 15.6 + 4.7 mm Hg in pseudophakic and 16 + 3.7 mm Hg in phakic eyes. Conclusions:In eyes with POAG, LTP in pseudophakic eyes is as effective as in phakic eyes.
