Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose:Thinner central corneal thickness (CCT) is likely to be a risk factor for ocular hypertension patients to develop POAG. This study compares the CCT of various Asian subpopulations (Chinese, Filipino, Japanese) to those of Caucasians, African Americans and Hispanics. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed and compared the CCT of right eyes of 121 Caucasians, 112 Chinese, 52 Hispanics, 37 Filipinos, 32 African Americans, and 31 Japanese. Results: African Americans (510.6 ± 37.7µm) had thinner CCT than all other races (P<0.05). Japanese (529.3 ± 31.9µm) had thinner CCT than Chinese (P<0.04). No statistically significant difference was noted between the mean CCT of all other racial groups. Conclusions: Caucasians, Chinese, Hispanics and Filipinos have comparable CCT measurements, while the CCT of African Americans is significantly thinner. There is a difference in CCT among Asian subpopulations with Japanese having thinner CCT than Chinese. Statistical Significance Between Races
