Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose:To evaluate the newly developed hydroxyapatite coated ceramic sphere(CS) in rabbits and compare it with hydroxyapatite sphere(HS) Methods:The authors examined the CS microscopically with scanning electron microscope. Animal implantation study was performed using forty–two New Zealand albino rabbits. Implant fibrovascularization and collagen tissue maturation were graded histopathologically by light microscope. Results:The CS has a more extensive uniform pore size and structure than HS. The fibrovascularization occurred throughout the implant by 4 weeks. And all of the specimen had full collagen tissue maturation at 24 weeks. Conclusions:The CS was biocompatible as HS, and has superior properties including easy to manufacture, structurally strong, less expensive than HS, lighter implant weight, and without biodegrading.
