Abstract
Abstract: :
Purpose: To evaluate ocular toxicity to two fourth generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics, gatifloxicin and moxifloxicin, using objective and subjective measurements. Methods: Ten normal subjects recieved one drop of gatifloxicin in one eye, and one drop of moxifloxicin in the fellow eye. Measurements were made immediately before, and seven minutes after treatment. Conjunctival injection was measured objectively by colorimetry, and subjectively by observation. Lid thickness was measured objectively using a millimeter reticle in a slit lamp eye piece. Ocular surface sensation was measured objectively using aesthesiometry. Pupil size was measured objectively with a pupillometer. Chemosis was measured subjectively by observation, and burning/stinging was measured subjectively by questioning the patient. Results: Objective measurements of conjunctival injection, lid thickness, pupil size, and ocular surface sensation were possible, as were subjective measurements of conjunctival injection, chemosis, and burning/stinging. There was no significant difference in conjunctival injection, lid thickness, ocular surface sensation, pupil size, chemosis, or burning/stinging, in eyes receiving gatifloxacin compared with eyes receiving moxifloxicin. Conclusion: No toxicity to gatifloxicin or moxifloxicin were detected, and no difference between the two treatments was found.
