Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To report successful conservative treatment in two cases of retinoblastoma arising by malignant transformation of retinoma. Methods: Conservative treatment was applied under general anaesthesia in 2 cases with malignant transformed retinoma. Evolution of the tumours was documented with Retcam photography from diagnosis to complete remission. Results: A type III regression pattern retinoma was diagnosed in the right eye of a 22 month–old girl (case 1) and in the right eye of a 14 month–old boy (case 2). The lesion was unifocal in both patients. Malignant transformation occurred 11 and 13 months after diagnosis in case 1 and 2 respectively. A conservative treatment, including chemotherapy, thermo–chemotherapy and photocoagulation, allowed complete regression of these tumours with a disease–free interval of 9 months in case 1 and 5 months in case 2. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of complete remission following conservative treatment of malignant transformed retinoma.
