Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To assess efficiency of two different techniques and various substances in the prevention of PCO. Methods: 33 NZW rabbits (2.31±0.91 kg.) were used. Lens material was removed through a micro-capsulorhexis and the empty capsular bag was refilled (Phaco-Ersatz surgey). In group 1 of animals (10 rabbits) the micro-capsulorhexis was left open. In group 2, a Mini Capsulorhexis Valve (MCV) was placed to seal the capsulorhexis. In both groups a mixture of viscoelastic (1.4% sodium hyaluronate, SHA, Corneal SA, France) and substance was injected into the empty lens capsule before refilling. The mixture was removed after 3 min, and the empty bag was rinsed with BSS and refilled with pure SHA. Double-distilled water was used as a substance for Group 1. The following substances were used for group 2: SHA only (control, n=1), Mitomycin-C (0.2mg/ml, n=7), EDTA (10mM and 15mM, n=5), 5-flurouracil (5-FU, 33mg/ml, n=2), 0.003% acetic acid (n=8), and double distilled water (n=10). Postoperative follow-up to evaluate PCO was done at 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days, when animals were euthanized. Results: PCO and lens regrowth were observed in both groups. Group 1 presented PCO earlier than Group 2. In Group 1, PCO appeared between day 7 and 36. For Group 2 the order of appearance of PCO was: EDTA 15mM (POD1), SHA (POD 7), Mitomycin-C (POD 15), acetic acid (0.3%) (POD 15), acetic acid (3%) (POD 15), saline (POD 15), acetic acid 0.003% (POD 22), 5-FU (POD 22), EDTA10mM (POD22) and double distilled water (POD29). Conclusion:MCV is effective in delaying the appearance of PCO in the rabbit. EDTA and distilled water presented the longest delay of PCO formation when the lens was fitted with a MCV.
