Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the contraction of epiretinal membranes (ERM) and metamorphopsia scores using a new metamophopsia chart (M-CHARTSTM) we have developed. Methods: Using M-CHARTSTM, we quantified the changes in the metamorphopsia scores of 27 eyes of 27 patients with ERM. Follow-up periods ranged from 12 to 30 months (mean: 17.3 months). We also developed new image analysis software in order to quantify the retinal contraction due to ERM. Using this software, we composed the fundus images by matching of the optic discs and choroidal vessels. The movement of the retinal vessels was evaluated as the ERM contraction in 25 areas of macula during the observation periods. Results: Increase of metamorphopsia scores was observed in 8 patients during the follow-up periods. Increase of metamorphopsia scores and decrease of visual acuities was observed in 2 patients. Only one patient showed a decrease of visual acuity without increase of metamorphopsia score. There was a significant correlation between the degree of retinal contraction and metamorphopsia score (p<0.05). It was suggested that there was a relationship between the direction of the ERM contractions and the direction of the metamorphopsia. Conclusions: M-CHARTSTM is a simple and useful method for the detection and follow-up of metamorphopsia in patients with ERM.
