Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of our original eye steamer for obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: Our original eye steamer was designed to warm up and moisturize eyelids and ocular surface. The eye steamer was applied to the MGD patients who complained of ocular discomfort for 10 minutes. We examined temperatures of eyelids and corneas, visual analog scale (VAS) of symptom, Schirmer test, tear breakup time (BUT), tear interference image grading, fluoresein score. Results: Temperatures on corneas and eyelids were significantly elevated (p<0.005). BUT and VAS of ocular discomfort improved significantly in MGD patients by the treatment (p<0.005). There were no significant change in Schirmer test, tear interference image and fluoresein score. There was no adverse effect. Conclusions: Our original eye steamer is useful, effective and safe to MGD patients. The application will be considered as one of the treatment for MGD.
