Purpose: This study investigated differences in visual function, optic disc topography and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness between healthy Black and White eyes. Methods: Ninety-nine healthy eyes (based on clinical examination and intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤ 22 mm Hg) of age-matched subjects (37 Blacks, 62 Whites) were included. Visual function was assessed with standard automated perimetry (SAP), short-wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP) and frequency doubling technology (FDT). Optic disc topography and RNFL thickness were measured with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results: Racial differences in Mean Deviation (MD) (FDT) and number of abnormal points on Pattern Deviation plots (SAP and FDT) were found, even though the MDs were within the normal range in both groups. No difference in Pattern Standard Deviation was observed in any test. No significant differences were found for any of the SWAP parameters. Blacks had significantly larger optic discs and rim areas, while no difference in cup shape or RNFL thickness was found with the HRT. OCT-measured RNFL was thicker in both the superior (p=.014) and inferior (p=.005) quadrants in Blacks, with no significant difference in mean RNFL thickness. Finally, significant differences in IOP and central corneal thickness (CCT) were found. The difference in IOP between Black and White eyes would likely increase after correcting for CCT. Prospective studies are needed to further investigate these apparent racial differences.
