Abstract: : Purpose: To study the expression of cyclin D1, a regulating factor of a cell cycle at G1 phase, in human lens epithelial (HLE) cells. Method: Cultured HLE cell line cells (SRA01/04) and HLE cells with anterior capsule which was obtained during a cataract extraction were examined by immunohistochemistry for cyclin D1. Result: Cytoplasm around the nucleus in all proliferative phase of SRA01/04 showed positive reaction for cyclin D1; some nuclei also showed positive. Cyclin D1 positive cells became less evident and reaction was weaker at high cell density in the non-proliferative phase. Cyclin D1 was not detected in HLE cells obtained from cataract patients expect in the multi-layered cells around fibrotic opacity of anterior subcapsular cataract. Conclusion: Cyclin D1 is expressed in HLE cells when they are in the proliferative phase both in vitro and in vivo.
