Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: As more and more low vision patients appear in China, there is a need to view health from low vision patients' own assessment of their functional status. But no Chinese systematic assessment method has been established for this before. This survey is aiming to translate a well-established vision-specific quality-of-life assessment English questionnaire "Low Vision Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (LVQOL)" into Chinese, then give psychometric evaluation of this Chinese-language version LVQOL. Methods: 2 experts finished the 2 forward translations and 2 backward translations. 2 committees composed of patients, heath workers and common residents reviewed the questionnaire to make culture adaptations after every translation. To test the reliability of the Chinese version questionnaire, 150 low vision patients were arranged to finish it twice at an interval of 2 weeks. 3 ophthalmologists in different eye institutes evaluated the validity of the questionnaire. Results: A Chinese version LVQOL was constructed after translation and adaptation. This questionnaire has a high internal consistency (Cronbach alpha=0.86) and a high 2-week test-retest reliability (correlation coefficients=0.76). According to the evaluation of 3 ophthalmologists, the content validity and construct validity is both high. Conclusion: This Chinese version LVQOL was successfully established and has been proven to be psychometrically sound.
