To evaluate and compare the structural characteristics related to vitreomacular adhesion (VMA), vitreomacular traction (VMT) and macular holes (MHs).
The Institutional Review Board approved the study protocol. From January 2009 to June 2015, 13,898 macular scans were retrospectively revised. All of them were performed with the Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). Macular thickness and OCT outcomes were compared between groups using ANOVA (Scheffé post-hoc comparisons) and chi-square tests.
Seven hundred and forty-six cases had VMA, 62 had VMT and 66 had MHs (prevalence of MH was 0.4%). The VMA width was larger (3075.9 ± 1080.1 µm) than the VMT width (873.2 ± 801.1 µm; p<0.001). Mean MH size was 485.1 ± 223.0 µm. Central macular thickness was thicker in the VMT and MH groups compared to the control group. Epiretinal membrane (ERM) was observed in 0.5%, 17.7%, and 33.3% of cases in the VMA, VMT, and MH groups, respectively (p<0.001). Age was inversely correlated with the VMA (r=-0.517; p<0.001) and VMT width (-0.349; p=0.006). The 27.4% of VMT and the 69.7% of MHs presented intraretinal cysts, while retinal pigment epithelial detachment was observed in 4.8% of individuals with VMT and 3.0% of subjects with MH.
Macular thickness in the paracentral ETDRS regions was increased in MH compared to the control group. Age was inversely correlated with the width of the VMA and VMT. A third of MHs were associated with ERM.
