Abstract
Purpose :
Macular edema is a frequent complication of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and posterior uveitis. The aim of our study was to compare the evolution of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) of macular edemas of ischemic and inflammatory origin after injections of intravitreous dexamethasone implants.
Methods :
In this open-label, monocenter, comparative and retrospective study, all the patients with macular edema due to uveitis or retinal vein occlusion, treated by intravitreous dexamethasone implants were analyzed with a SD-OCT single slice analysis and a MAP between January 2013 and September 2015. The central macular thickness, choroidal thickness, ellipsoidal line and pigmentary epithelium of the retina were analyzed at inclusion, 6 months, 12 months and 24 months of evolution. Demographics features, such as age and gender, were studied and correlated to visual acuity and the number of recurrences.
Results :
11 patient were included in the uveitis group and 23 in the RVO group. Choroidal thickness was significantly larger in the uveitis group compared to the OVR group at day 1 (p=0,0035) as well as the number of recurrences (p=0,005) over the 2 years. We did not find any significant difference (p> 0,05) between the two groups regarding the other features studied during the follow up.
Conclusions :
Choroidal thickness seems initially greater in uveitis macular edemas compared to RVO edemas. Larger prospective studies would be necessary to confirm this difference and analyze the evolution of the retinal layers thickness.
