Abstract
Purpose :
To compare the related factors or manifestations of post-operative Enterococcus species and Staphylococcus epidermidis endophthalmitis in South Korea
Methods :
We retrospectively analyzed medical records of post-operative Enterococcus species and S. epidermidis endophthalmitis patients at 8 institutions between January 1, 2004, and July 31, 2010. Various factors including age, sex, residence, systemic diseases, smoking and drinking history, and best corrected visual acuity, duration from causative intraocular surgery to symptom development were compared between 2 groups.
Results :
Total number of post-operative endophthalmitis cases was 128 and in 116 cases, microbiological culture test from aqueous humor or vitreous was performed. Among them, the culture proven cases were 67 (57.8%). Among them, Enterococcus species endophthalmitis cases were 19 (28.4%) and S. epidermidis endophthalmitis cases were 14 (20.9%). Age, sex, causative procedure, past medical history, social history, and laterality were not different in 2 groups. Relationship of residential area and organism distribution was not significant. Final visual acuity was significantly worse in Enterococcus species endophthalmitis group than S. epidermidis group (p=0.01). Duration from causative procedure to symptom development was significantly shorter in Enterococcus species endophthalmitis group (p=0.004).
Conclusions :
Enterococcus species endophthalmitis showed worse final visual acuity and earlier symptom development than S. epidermidis endophthalmitis.
