Abstract
Purpose :
To describe the surgical technique and outcomes of collagen matrix implantation following primary pterygium excision and compare to subjects who received intraoperative topical mitomycin C.
Methods :
This was a retrospective comparative study between January 2014 and November 2015. Primary pterygium excision was performed using bare sclera technique followed by implantation of a collagen matrix implant (Ologen®) in 14 eyes of 14 patients. The comparison group had 31 eyes of 31 patients who received pterygium excision and 5 minutes of intraoperative application of topical 0.02% mitomycin C
Results :
All surgeries were completed successfully in both groups. No intraoperative complications were noted. The mean size of collagen implant was 9.7mm2. One recurrence were noted in the collagen implant group at postoperative one year giving an overall recurrence rate of 7.1% at 1 year, whereas 4 recurrences were noted in the mitomycin C group (12.9%). Three implants were visibly retained at 1 year following surgery. No other postoperative complication was reported.
Conclusions :
Collagen matrix implant was a safe adjuvant option in the surgical management of primary pterygium.
