Abstract

Purpose : To assess the OASIS iris expander effect using in phacoemulsification surgery of cataract with small pupil.

Methods :
This is a retrospective cases study. 13 microcoria cataract cases were teared dilated by using two instruments in group 1, and 9 microcoria cataract cases were dilated by using OASIS iris expander in group 2. 3.2 mm clear corneal incision were used in phacoemulsification. All cases were followed up at postoperative 1 week and 1, 3, 6 months. The best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, corneal endothelial cell counts, pupil size of before and after surgery were compared. An independent sample t test were used in analysis.

Results :
All surgery was completed successfully by the same doctor. Intraocular lens were implanted in capsule 100%,and no complications occurred. The eyes’ condition before surgery and postoperative 6 months were compared: best corrected visual acuity: group1: 0.17±0.14 VS0.41±0.3, group2: 0.16±0.14 VS 0.77±0.23; Intraocular pressure: group 1: 14.62±4.7 VS14.22 ± 6 mmHg, group 2: 15.7±5.7 VS12.67±6.35mmHg; Corneal endothelial cell counts: group 1: 2498±564VS1486±718, groups 2: 2424±640VS1246±516; there were more corneal endothelial cell reduce in group 2. The pupil diameter: group 1: 2.3±0.35 VS4±0.88 mm, groups2: 1.94±0.5VS4.7±1.57mm.

Conclusions :

It does not affect the postoperative visual acuity and intraocular pressure using OASIS iris expander in microcoria cataract phacoemulsification. The pupils were larger postoperative. OASIS iris expander can help to dilate and hold pupils in surgery. OASIS iris expander make the surgery more convenienced and help to reduce the occurrence of intraoperative complications. It need to pay attention to protect corneal endothelial cell when use OASIS iris expander.
