Abstract
Purpose :
To analyze the use of spectral domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in comparing the insertion to limbus distance of the extraocular muscles previously operated measured by AS-OCT and during the surgery. As secondary objectives, to compare insertion to limbus distance versus insertion to anterior chamber (AC) angle AS-OCT measurements in previously operated muscles. Finally, to asses the use of AS-OCT in children.
Methods :
A cross-sectional study was performed with 13 patients between 7 and 51 years, who underwent AS-OCT exam and a strabismus surgery. 17 extraocular muscles of 13 patients previously submitted to strabismus surgery underwent AS-OCT, followed by repeat strabismus surgery. The descriptive analysis of the data was made due to reduced sample of muscles.
Results :
From the 17 muscles evaluated by AS-OCT, it was possible to find the insertion site of five of them, the measurement being similar to that found during surgery for the horizontal rectus muscles. The limbus proved to be a better reference in AS-OCT comparing to anterior chamber angle. The insertions of the remaining 12 muscles were not found within the field allowed by the AS-OCT, however, for 8 of them the values of the estimated measures were consistent with that found during the surgery. All children evaluated cooperated with the exam.
Conclusions :
The AS-OCT could not accurately define the exact location of all extraocular muscles, but it was able to signal its distance in a consistent way in most of the resected muscles. It was not possible to assess the best reference in the AS-OCT, if the limbus or the anterior chamber angle, due to the small sample of muscles. The AS-OCT could be performed in the children of this study.
