Abstract

Purpose : Spectralis multicolor (MC, Heiderberg engeneering, Germany) is a new scanning laser ophthalmoscopy with three different wavelengths which can obtain clearer retinal images than conventional color funduscopy (CF). The blue laser of 486nm, which is the shortest one in MC, can capture details of retinal structures in retinal nerve fiber layer(NFL). However, there are a few reports comparing the sensitivity of MC and CF on abnormalities in NFL. Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare the sensitivity of MC and CF on abnormalities in NFL in patients with retinal diseases.

Methods : One hundred and seventy seven eyes of 108 patients with ocular diseases who visited Kagoshima University hospital between January to July 2017 were enrolled in this study. When an abnormal finding was detected by MC (blue laser), the image by CF from same subject was also assessed whether the same finding was detectable. Sensitivity of MC and CF was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test.

Results : Abnormal findings in NFL were detected in 29 eyes (16.4%). In these 29 eyes, mean age was 71.5 +/- 11.0, mean visual acuity (logMAR) was 0.69 +/- 0.34, mean refractive error was -0.44+/- 0.97 and mean axial length was 23.2 +/- 1.21. 11 eyes had a diabetic retinopathy followed by 6 eyes of glaucoma, 5 eyes of age-related macular degeneration, 2 eyes of retinal vein oculusion and 5 eyes of other diseases in these eyes. Abnormal findings in NFL could be confirmed both by MC and CF in 6 eyes (20.6%) but that of the other eye could be confirmed only by MC. Sensitivity of abnormal findings in retinal nerve fiber layer by MC was significantly higher than that of CF (P<0.001)

Conclusions : Detection of abnormal findings in NFL by MC was more sensitive than by CF. MC could be more useful tool for detection of abnormal findings in NFL than CF.
