Abstract

Purpose :

To evaluate foveal OCT morphology and macular abnormalities in acute ROP comparing to fluorescein angiography patterns .

Methods :
7 preterms patients (14 eyes) (2 males, 5 female) with mean BW 725.25 gr. and mean GA 25.5 weeks were examined.
Fluorescein Angiography (Retcam ) became available at Policlinico Gemelli for NICU since 2009 and used in ROP evaluation. Bioptigen Envisu Handled OCT became avialable since March 2017 for NICU.
Every patient examinated was affected by acute phase ROP (ROP stage 3 zone 2 or ROP stage 3 zone 1) . The patients underwent to Handled Bioptigen OCT examination and Fluorescein angiography performed at the same time by a pediatric ophthalmologist. The mean GA at the exam date was 35.5 weeks .

Results :

Average Central foveal thickness (CFT) was 205.25 microns , the average foveal pit diameter (FPDi) was 1960 microns, the average Foveal pit depht (FPDe) was 99.1 microns. Macular edema was recorded in only two patients (4 eyes). The mean CFT in edema affected patients was 289 microns.
FA showed no macular leakeage or hyperfluorescence. A slight choroidal hyperfluorescence was observed in all the patients.

Conclusions : Macular edema seems to be easy related to zone 1 ROP.
Further studies with larger figures are required to understand the meaning of these findings and correlation between FA and OCT patterns in acute phase ROP.
