Abstract
Purpose :
Purpose: We recently reported that retinal sensitivity was related to serous retinal detachment (SRD) height in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). However, clinical characteristics in our previous study was heterogeneous, because esolved CSC patients were included. In addition, segmentation of retinal layer was not carried out and its relationship with CSC was not investigated. The purpose of the present study was to identify the optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters associated with retinal sensitivity only in eyes with chronic CSC, performing microperimetry and OCT measurements twice during the follow-up period to calculate the change of SRD.
Methods :
Methods: Fifteen eyes of 15 patients in chronic CSC were enrolled. Twelve were male and average age was 50.2 years. Retinal sensitivity was measured using the MP-3 microperimeter (NIDEK, Japan). Relationship among visual functions, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the retinal sensitivity, and thicknesses of the retinal nerve fiver layer + ganglion cell layer, the inner nuclear layer, the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and serous retinal detachment height (SRDH) were analyzed, using linear mixed model. All study protocols adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board of The University of Tokyo Hospital.
Results :
Results: The mean follow-up period was 74.9 ± 39.7 days. All of the eyes demonstrated a change of SRDH between the two examinations. There were significant differences in mean retinal sensibility (p<0.05) between the first and second examination but not in BCVA (p=0.94). At each time point, BCVA was associated with retinal sensitivities and the changes of BCVA were related to those of retinal sensitivities (p<0.001). The retinal sensitivity was correlated with SRDH and ONL thickness, among OCT parameters. The change of SRDH was associated with that of retinal sensitivity (p<0.05), but not with that of BCVA (p=0.24).
Conclusions :
Conclusions: In chronic CSC, retinal sensitivity is significantly correlated with the ONL thickness and SRDH.
