Abstract
Purpose :
To evaluate preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) images in patients with macular-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Methods :
Eighty-eight patients with macular-off RRD diagnosed and treated at Tokyo Medical University Hospital between January 2016 and April 2017 were reviewed. The patients comprised 68 males and 20 females with mean age of 54.0 ± 15.6 years. We retrospectively studied preoperative OCT images of macula, visual acuity, axial length, estimated duration of macular-off retinal detachment, and shape of retinal tear (flap tear or atrophic hole).
Results :
Macular edema in outer nuclear layer (ONL) (ONL+) was detected in 59 cases (67%). There were no significant differences in mean age, preoperative visual acuity, and axial length between ONL+ and absence of macular edema in ONL (ONL-). On the other hand, duration of macular-off retinal attachment was significantly shorter in OCT+ (p<0.001). Furthermore, flap tear with RRD was a risk factor of the presence of edema in ONL (p < 0.001).
Conclusions :
A high rate of macular edema in ONL was observed on preoperative OCT images of patients with macular-off RRD. ONL+ may indicate acute phase change of macular-off RRD.
