Abstract
Presentation Description :
Lifestyle interventions combined with therapeutics that target mitochondria hold great promise for reducing vision loss for both glaucoma and age related macular degeneration. For efficient, clean energy production in the metabolically active retina, balanced renewal (biogenesis) and recycling (mitophagy) of mitochondria must occur. Positive effects of exercise, fasting, and some dietary supplements converge on this pathway of mitochondrial quality control. Conversely aging, overnutrition or lack of exercise impair mitophagy, leading to energetic failure and oxidative stress. Recent research insights and remaining gaps will be highlighted, with a focus on glaucoma.
