This talk will review how the environment can modify genomic structure directly via formation of mosaics and alterations in telomere length. It will also review the biostatistical meaning of a gene X environment interaction. Data regarding how the relation between common body mass index (BMI) gene variants and obesity is modified by several lifestyle factors will be presented. This knowledge could be a powerful tool to motivate adherence to a healthy lifetsyle that translates into a normal BMI. Finally this talk will review how discovery of gene X environment interactins provide powerful insights into ophthalmic disease and can lead to cost effective primary prevention measures.
